Parenting Skills Training

Raising a child with ADHD can at times be a very frustrating experience. Parents and children can get caught in vicious cycles of power struggles just to get on with a daily routine, for example, getting up to go to school, finishing homework, eating meals, and taking showers. Given the nature of the diagnosis, the ADHD child can at times be defiant, non-compliant, argumentative, and even aggressive towards their parents.

Consequently, the parent-child relationship can be damaged as the child becomes angry at their parents’ reminder to do something while in turn the parents become frustrated as their efforts are undermined or their authority is challenged.

Parenting skills training program in our clinic is designed to help the parents of an ADHD child to understand their child’s problems and to identify and learn strategies in how to support the child by being consistent, setting limits, creating structure, being positive, and enhancing meaningful communication. This can be conducted in a one-on-one or group setting. Parents with the appropriate parenting skills can help the child to maintain structure and routine, reduce negative behaviors, reinforce positive behaviors, and help foster parent-child communication.
